Rhee Tackles Classroom Challenge
The following article is the current cover story of TIME Magazine. It provides a very interesting perspective on tenure, failing schools and educational reform. I am interested to hear what people think about it.
Interestingly enough, in our recent issue of NEAToday, Rhee received an F on her efforts to get rid of tenure, introduce merit-based pay, and to pay students for better grades and attendance. On the other hand, several Texas Mayors who walked door to door to persuade dropouts to return to school, received an A for their efforts. A mere twenty percent of the students contacted actually returned to school.
Many of our students now use the I-pod touch, which can run hundreds of educational applications. They can have the entire works of Shakespeare at their fingertips....for free! Or they can quiz themselves on the periodic table! Students can download programs for virtually every subject and although some of the programs do have a fee, many of them are completely free. If you have the time, stop by the I-Tunes store to check out the flash cards of the 21st century!
